Fall is full of new sights, smells, and tastes. And, that makes it a perfect topic for fall writing prompts!

My kids and I have been talking about and experiencing fall quite a bit lately. From sitting around the table peeling apples for applesauce to exploring the many forms that pumpkins and gourds can take as they grow.

I wanted to include these things in our fall writing. So, I made a pack of 5 free fall writing prompts that you can use with your students this fall.

WRITING PROMPTS

My daughter wanted to color the picture so much she only got through one word before she started;)

Writing Discussions

The coloring actually gave us the perfect opportunity to think about the writing prompt.  My daughter chose the ‘My favorite fall smell is…’ writing prompt. So, we discussed what kinds of smells are associated with fall and which ones we love the most. Try using some of these Fall Vocabulary Words to prompt ideas for writing or to add to a writing center.

Here are a few of the ideas we came up with during our talk:

Crisp air

Leaves and dirt on cool fall days

Apples

Brown Sugar

Cinnamon

Other spices like nutmeg

Pumpkin pie

Baking Bread

Thanksgiving Dinner

My daughter decided that apple pie was her favorite smell. And, we talked further about how the smell of apple pie is warm apples and cinnamon.

Sensory Writing

To add a sensory element to our writing time, I actually got out jars of cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice and let my daughter smell it while we were talking. She loved this of course!

If you have spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, or pumpkin pie spice try pulling them out during this writing activity. It adds a fun sensory element to your writing time.

Another sensory idea is to take a nature walk before you write and have your discussion outside in the fall weather.
