What is Groundhog Day?

Groundhog Day is a tradition celebrated annually in the United States and Canada on February 2nd. The tradition goes that as the groundhog emerges from hibernation he can predict the weather. If the sun is shining and he sees his shadow then he goes back to his burrow and back to sleep. And, we should expect another six more weeks of winter.

On the other hand, if it’s cloudy and he doesn’t see his shadow then an early spring can be expected.

Now, I don’t know if groundhogs can really predict the weather. But, it is a fun topic to contemplate with kiddos;)

Below are links to learn more about groundhogs and the holiday.

The biggest festival to celebrate this holiday is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania every year. Find out about the Legend & Lore of Groundhog Day.
