Kindergarten Readiness Assessment

Last year I made a free Kindergarten Readiness Checklist and it turned out to be one of my most popular free resources. My purpose in creating it was to assess my daughter’s basic academic skills. And, focus our learning activities on her preschool to Kindergarten transition.

And, it turned out that like me, others were trying to gauge their children’s Kindergarten Readiness as well. So, this spring I decided to expand on this freebie and make a free Kindergarten Readiness Assessment Pack that will cover the basics.

With the end of the school year quickly approaching it’s a perfect time to assess where your child is and help gear learning toward those things your child may need to work on.

Practicing Kindergarten Readiness Skills

There are so many simple ways to organically add skills practice to your child’s day. Just having conversations with your preschooler is a great way to increase their understanding of basic skills. Talk with them about the color of their clothes, count the stuffed animals on the living room floor, sing the ABC’s together.

I use Kindergarten Stations in my home to give my daughter small targeted enrichment in lots of areas. And, this spring we’ve been doing some name writing practice outside with these Spring Name Writing Activities.

If you’re interested in more formal learning, you should check out our Letter of the Week Series or this brand new fantastic phonics curriculum we’re using.

Additional Skills Practice

My assessment purposefully includes just basic academic skills. I wanted to decrease overwhelm and frustration by creating a giant list. But, there are of course other skills I could have included. Below, I’ve listed a few other skills you can practice to ready your child for Kindergarten.

If you want ideas to help you plan your preschool days check out this post: Preschool Planning Made Simple. I break it down and walk you through the process of planning simple preschool days. And, I created a set of free preschool planning pages to help you as well.

Fine Motor Skills

These are easily practiced through the use of manipulatives, such as building blocks, lacing beads, and other small toys. Also, allowing your children time to practice their cutting skills with safety scissors.

Gross Motor Skills

Play is the best time to practice gross motor skills. Just get outside in the backyard or on the playground and do fun things like jumping, running, throwing balls, and climbing.

Social/Emotional Development

One of the best ways to teach things like empathy to children is by reading to them. Just the other day, my daughter and I read a book about a girl who was getting picked on at school. My daughter just couldn’t bear the teasing this character endured and cried as we read the story. We had a fantastic talk about empathy and how it’s good to feel those things for other people.

Self-Care

This includes things like dressing themselves, using the bathroom, and handwashing. And, patience, patience, patience is all you need to help your child learn to take care of themselves independently (no problem, right?). I struggle with this so often, because it can be so much quicker and simpler to just do things for my kiddos. But, I’m only hurting them and me when I do.
