Letter I Book List
What Do You Do With An Idea? by Mae Besom
This book is all about building confidence in the ideas of our little learners. The boy in the story has an idea that others don’t believe in, but he holds onto it anyway. And, because he doesn’t give up, the idea begins to grow into something beautiful. I love the premise behind this story so much. Because a lack of confidence is often the killer of our dreams, isn’t it?
The Little Island by Margaret Wise Brown
Once there was a little island in the ocean that changes with the seasons, the time that passes, a storm, and the animals that stop by. Written in a rhythmic way and including beautiful illustrations, this is another great story for children by Margaret Wise Brown.
Immi’s Gift by Karin Littlewood
Immi keeps finding unexpected things in her ice fishing hole in this magical story about two worlds far apart but still connected.
Inch By Inch by Leo Lionni
Measure along with the little inchworm in the story as he makes his way inch by inch.
Insect Detective by Steve Voake
This book is meant to get kids actively investigating insects by telling them how to find them in nature. It is done in picture book format but full of facts and knowledge about insects and even has an index in the back.
I Wanna Iguana by Karen Kaufman Orloff
In this cute story, a boy and his mom go back and forth, through notes, about the idea of getting a pet iguana. I have personally had this conversation a time or two with my own boy;)

Letter I Play Ideas
Ice Architecture:
This week is a perfect time to play with some ice! Ice cubes are fantastic building blocks and I’ve used them many times for sensory play. It’s frugal and easy to adapt to whatever topic we’re learning about by changing the color or even adding things to the water to freeze into the ice.
This summer I made blue and green ice cubes for my daughter to play with. I froze a few trays at a time adding a drop of food coloring to the bottom of each space before I added the water. Then, I put the cubes in gallon Ziploc freezer bags to store them until I had enough for our ice building sensory play. If you don’t have a small RV freezer you can probably do all of the trays you need at one time;)
The ice will start to melt immediately and that actually helps in the building process as the ice cubes will “stick” to each other and your child’s building will stay together a little longer. I used a plastic tray with a lip to contain the melting ice, but a cookie sheet would work well too.
Let your child’s imagination run wild as they build igloos, skyscrapers or whatever else they come up with!
More Play Ideas:
- Set up an art station and let your child illustrate their own book
- Set up a dramatic play Ice Cream Shop
- Study Insects and be an entomologist
Have fun learning about Letter I this week!
