Letter Q Book List

The Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco

We love this story. It is full of history, culture, tradition, and family. It is the story of a quilt made from clothes worn by loved ones to remember the home in Russia they left behind when coming to America. But, it’s also so much more. It is the story of a family and how this quilt was passed down from mother to daughter through the generations.

Click, Clack, Quackity-Quack by Doreen Cronin

This is an alphabet book that includes all the characters from Farmer Brown’s farm in the book Click, Clack, Moo Cows that Type. And, the animals are typing again. Follow A-Z  the alphabet to see what these silly animals are up to this time.

Giggle, Giggle, Quack by Doreen Cronin

This is another book featuring Farmer Brown and his typing animals. This time Farmer Brown is going on vacation, but he warns his brother that Duck is trouble when he leaves him to watch the animals. And, as Duck and the other animals take full advantage of Farmer Brown being away, Brother Bob hears quite a few giggles along with the expected quacks.

Quick as a Cricket by Audrey Wood

This fun book is full of similies and is perfect for preschoolers. The little boy in the story looks at the animal world around him finding things he can do too, like being quick as a cricket.

The Three Questions by John J. Muth

Nikoli has some pretty big questions, so he turns to a wise old turtle for help. This picture book for children is based on a short story by Leo Tolstoy.

Little Quack by Lauren Thompson

Splish, Splash, and splosh with little Quack and his brothers and sisters in this cute picture book.

Letter Q Play Ideas

Set up a quilting station for your kiddo this week for some letter Q fun.

I always keep scraps of fabric around for projects, art, and play. Preschoolers may not be ready for real needles, but if not, they can play with fabric and making patterns and art from fabric without the needles and thread. After all, quilts are definitely works of art! Below is a picture of some palm trees from one of our fabric playtime creations.

Here’s what you need:

  • Fabric Scraps – For an added learning element you could precut some of your fabric into fun shapes, like circles, squares, triangles etc. to add in some shape recognition and practice

The rest of the list is optional so you can make this as simple or elaborate as you want.

  • Scissors (if you want to let them cut out their own fabric shapes)
  • Stencils and a fabric pen, so they could trace their own shapes in the fabric
  • A larger square or rectangle of fabric

Quilting station for a fun letter Q week play idea

Let your child play with making fabric designs using the larger piece of fabric as a canvas. We layered several strips of fabric to make ours. I would suggest first taping the corners of this larger piece of fabric down to keep it from moving around. And, ironing the larger piece wouldn’t hurt either if it’s as wrinkled as mine is above;)

Have fun learning about Letter Q this week!
