This is the second pop-up card in this little nursery rhyme sequencing series I’m doing. This week features Little Bo Peep sequencing.

My daughter still loves nursery rhymes. And, she’s learning to read this year. So, I’ve been putting together activities and printables for her related to phonics, rhyming, syllables, and word families.

My latest idea was to make story sequencing cards featuring nursery rhymes, so we could recite the rhymes and play with nursery rhyme sequencing and retelling. And, I decided to add a fun pop-up element to it.

Why Teach Story Sequencing?

Story sequencing is when children identify the parts of a story, the beginning, middle, and end. It is also the retelling of events in order of how they happen, first, last, etc.

Sequencing works on skills like:

Reading Comprehension – Putting stories together through activities like this helps children work on the ability to understand what they read.

Learning Ordinal Numbers –  As your child places the story pieces in the correct order they are thinking through which part of the story comes first, second, third and so on.

Attention to Detail – For instance, in this particular story sequencing activity there are two versions of Little Bo Peep. One where she’s standing smiling and another where she has her hand by her head looking for her sheep with a worried expression on her face.

The other three images are all of the sheep. So, children will have to look closely at each image to decide on the order in which they should appear. And, in this case, even think about the emotions of the character in the story.

Problem-Solving – Children have to put the pieces of a story together like a puzzle allowing for problem-solving practice.

Little Bo Peep Sequencing

I started this series of nursery rhyme pop-up cards with Mary, Mary Quite Contrary.

And, when I asked my daughter which rhyme she wanted to do next and she decided on Little Bo Peep. She loves wagging her tail behind her and giggling every time she says the rhyme;)

To start the activity, cut out the story pieces and have your child place them in the correct order.

The rhyme goes like this:

Little Bo-Peep Has lost her sheep,

And doesn’t know where To find them.

Leave them alone,

And they’ll come home,

Wagging their tails Behind them.

Pop-Up Nursery Rhyme Sequencing Card Assembly

1. Print out the story card and pieces (this is the printer I use).

I print on cardstock because I want the card to stand up well when sitting on the table. And, be able to handle all the opening and closing my daughter will be doing.

2. Fold the story card in half on the dotted line. Making sure that the writing is on the outside.

3. Cut along each set of solid black lines in the middle of the card.

4. Fold the card back the opposite way, so the writing is now on the inside.

5. Open the card back up and pop out the cut portions.

6. Cut out and attach story sequencing pictures to the bottom half of the popped out portion using tape or a glue stick.

My daughter has been using tape to attach her pieces because she’s currently working on the skill of breaking the tape off from the dispenser. She keeps trying to use as much force as possible instead of pulling gently to one side. The frustration has been a good learning experience for her and she’s starting to get the hang of it.

It only takes a few minutes to assemble. And, once it’s done your child will have a sweet pop-up nursery rhyme card featuring Little Bo Peep!
