My daughter is learning to read this year. So, we’ve been focusing in on things like phonics, rhyming, and having fun with syllables.
And, I put together a fun (and free!) shamrock syllables pack just in time for St. Patrick’s Day.
Shamrock Syllables
Learning to count syllables is a pre-reading skill that children are taught in the primary grades. It is a tool that will help them as they begin decoding words later on while reading.
Syllables can really help kids to hear the sounds in words. And, clapping out words gives them a kinesthetic and literal ‘hands-on” way to break them up.
Clap, Count, and Color
I put together two pages of images with a mix of syllables from one to three. There is a duplicate of each of these color pages available in black and white.
Each page can be used as a one-time worksheet or put into page protectors and used over and over.
On the left side of the page, your child will find five images that correspond to a row of three shamrocks to the left. Your child claps out the syllables while saying the word and then fills in that many shamrocks.
For example, if the image is of a circle, your child would clap twice and say cir-cle. And, then they would color in two of the three shamrocks to the right of the circle.
Shamrock Syllables Matching Center
To make these pages more useful, I included an answer key for each page of images. This will allow your child to independently check their work and self-correct.
But, these pages can also be used as a fun matching center!
To turn the answer key page into a shamrock syllables matching center simply cut the column of images away from the shamrocks. Then, cut each row of shamrocks apart.
Place the images and shamrock syllables cards together. Have children clap out the word for each picture and find the row of shamrocks with the correct number of syllables colored in to match to it.
