It’s been a long winter, hasn’t it? We are so glad to see Spring arriving around here! Below I’ve put together a list of spring name writing activities to get your inspired as the weather starts to warm up.

Helping your child learn to confidently recognize and write their own name is a great way to introduce and reinforce literacy in a natural way. Kids get excited about a group of letters when that group makes up their own name!

They are going to be more motivated to learn it. And,  let’s face it, that motivation factor can be more than half the battle when it comes to successful learning activities!

10 Spring Name Writing Activities

My daughter is pretty proficient in writing her own name, but we decided to do some fun springtime activities to reinforce using a capital letter at the beginning of her name and lowercase letters for the rest. She still occasionally uses a capital letter somewhere in the middle. The poor girl was given a 9 letter, crazy long name, so the practice doesn’t hurt. She’s also recently started practicing writing her middle and last name as well.

Try some of these name writing ideas especially for springtime. And don’t miss the free page of name writing strips I made. You can download them at the bottom of this post.

1. Rain Drop Name Writing

This activity was so fun! We used crayons to cover a plain piece of white paper with a wax film and then formed our letters with drops of water and a paintbrush.

You could also use wax paper instead of crayon and paper to from your waxy barrier. If you try the wax paper, add some food coloring to your water so it shows up more readily for your kiddos.

2. Flower Name Writing

Go on a nature walk and pick a few spring wildflowers to use to form letters.  If you don’t have any real flowers to pick yet silk flowers are always great to use for all sorts of things, like writing words, numbers, and imaginary garden play.

3. Seed Writing

Grab a packet of seeds and use them to form letters. Sunflower seeds are a good option because they’re big enough to be manipulated easily by little hands.

But, you could use any kind of seeds you have on hand. When you’re done writing extend the activity by planting the seeds.

4. Mud Names

Make mud pies with some of that delicious spring dirt and use sticks or fingers to trace names in the goo. Your kids will love it! And afterward, they’ll probably make you an interesting mud “soup” for lunch like my daughter did:)

5. Grass Writing

Use some of those new, beautiful patches of green grass starting to show up in your yard for a fun name writing activity. And, if you don’t like the idea of pulling up the grass then just cut some green blades out of green construction paper and let your child use them to form the letters of their name.

6. Stick Writing

The good ‘ole stick had to make an appearance on the list. Simple, cheap, and outdoors, that checks all the boxes for me! Try to find some sticks with curves in them for this activity so you can form the letters more easily. And, if you can’t don’t worry, just draw letters in the dirt, using your stick of course.

7. Stone Writing

Stones are a plentiful supply for having some letter forming fun outside this spring. Just collect and start shaping letters out of your stones.

8. Baby Carrots

Carrots and spring just go together.  So, take some of your snack food out of the fridge and let your child build their name with those baby carrots. Baby carrots are perfect for little hands and let’s face it it’s just fun to play with your food! And, your child will get to eat their work when they’re done.

9. Feather Names

Grab a bag of fun craft feathers to form letters. You could also use real feathers if you can find some on a nature walk.

Feathers are also great to use as pens or paint brushes for another fun way to practice name writing.

10. Cloud Names

Write out your child’s name and then have them trace it with cotton ball “clouds” to practice forming the letters. Or, have them try building their name using cotton swabs.

Giving your child a bottle of glue for this activity will add another fine motor skill aspect to it. Or use it as a center and let them trace their name over and over.

I hope this list of spring-themed name writing activities gives you and your kids some fun ways to practice name writing. Let me know in the comments about other things you try this spring.
