Volcano Sensory Play

Two simple ingredients, baking soda & vinegar, have been a constant in our science/sensory play over the years.

We have tried it many ways. But, most often I just sprinkle baking soda onto a baking sheet, give my kiddos a cup of vinegar, and let them play.

The vinegar reacts with the baking soda to make mini-volcano eruptions.

We usually use things like eye droppers or turkey basters to drop the vinegar onto the baking soda. It makes for lots of little eruptions and extends the activity. And, once all of the baking soda has “erupted” kids can still have a fantastic time playing in the aftermath.

All you need to throw this activity together is:

  • A baking sheet
  • Turkey baster, eye dropper, or a plastic syringe recycled from baby medicine
  • Baking soda
  • White Vinegar
  • Cup to hold the vinegar

OPTIONAL

  • Spoons or paintbrushes to play in the mixture

*A few drops of food coloring dropped on the tray will add an extra element of fun to this activity as well. When your child adds the vinegar it will cause the color to swirl as it mixes in with the fizzy baking soda goo.

Veterinarian Dramatic Play

For dramatic play, set up a Veterinarian office this week. I’m sure you probably already have quite a few stuffed animals that could be patients;)

We did this with our kids a few years ago and it was so fun and frugal! Here’s what we gave them to set up their Veterinary “office.”

  • A box of band-aids for their “patients”
  • A play stethoscope
  • Oversized white button-up shirts to use as lab coats
  • Clipboards
  • A toy phone
  • Pens, pencils, and notepaper to write down appointments
  • And, of course, many stuffed animal patients:)
