Letter M Book List

Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me by Eric Carle

This is a great book by Eric Carle that tells the story of a little girl who asks her father for the moon. And, then he works hard to get it for her!

Naughty Little Monkeys by Jim Aylesworth

Our copy of this book literally fell apart! The book takes your children through the alphabet alongside cute little monkeys and all the little tricks they know.  My kids loved to laugh and be shocked by the antics of these little monkeys.

5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed by Eileen Christelow

5 little monkeys jumping on the bed… Your kids will know the rhyme and love repeating as you read this book together.

Town Mouse Country Mouse by Jan Brett

I love this version of the classic story of the town mouse and the country mouse. They swap houses and find out a big life lesson: that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

If you Give a Moose a Muffin by Laura Numeroff

How tiring is it to have a moose as a house guest? And, what happens when you give him a muffin? Find out in this story from the If you give series.

Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? by Dr. Seuss

Your kiddo may not know the word onomatopoeia, but they will understand and use it after reading this book.  Dr. Seuss uses his fantastic rhymes to show kids what sound words are by encouraging them to make the sounds that Mr. Brown can do.

The Mitten by Jan Bret

After Baba makes Niki a requested snow-white mitten he heads outside to play. But, somewhere along the way, he loses it… And, all the animals outside find their way to and inside it! How many animals can fit inside the mitten before it bursts? This is a great story for retelling practice.

Letter M Play Ideas

Macaroni – Macaroni is a cheap and easy item to use in some letter M play time. Here are some fun ways to use macaroni this week:

  • As a base for a sensory bin
  • Paint it different colors and use it for projects
  • Glue it to paper to make macaroni art

Marshmallows – Build with marshmallows and toothpicks for a fun fine motor activity. Build a letter M or any other thing your child can think up. Like, animals, shapes, numbers, or a constellation like the ones in the photo below that I made with my kids at the end of the summer. We used mini-marshmallows, toothpicks, and the constellation cards from my Kid’s Constellation Kit.

Marble Painting – Grab a shallow tin baking pan or sheet and a few marbles. Put a piece of paper in the tin and drop paint and marbles into the pan. Have your child move the pan around to “paint” the paper with the marbles.

Marble Run – We used to have a marble run set that we spent a lot of time making marble runs with. But, you could make a simple and frugal one just by using paper towel tubes. Provide a few paper towel rolls and a few marbles and let your child attempt a marble run by propping the cardboard tubes up and letting the marbles run down.

Have fun learning about Letter M this week!
