Earlier this week, when we were doing our fall writing prompts about our favorite fall smells I got out our pumpkin pie spice for my daughter to smell. And, it’s amazing scent got me thinking about making some DIY taste-safe pumpkin pie playdough.
I had some canned pumpkin in the cabinet to make pumpkin overnight oatmeal. And, I knew there was enough to attempt a delicious smelling fall-inspired pumpkin pie play dough.
I love making and playing with DIY playdoughs, but I am generally impatient with the process. I want quick and easy. Which means, a short list of ingredients and definitely not having to cook it. So, read on for a super simple, taste-safe and no-cook pumpkin pie playdough recipe.

Ingredients
To start you need just 4 ingredients. I linked to them so you can see what I used.
- 1 15 oz. can Pumpkin
- 1 Cup Corn Starch
- 1 Cup Flour
- 1 tsp. Pumpkin Pie Spice
It will seem like a lot of dry ingredients at first, but that pumpkin really soaks it up, so keep mixing and it will come together. Mixing by hand really works in the flour and cornstarch too. If your dough is still sticky after everything’s all mixed, add more flour or cornstarch a little at a time until it’s the desired consistency.
And, If you don’t have pumpkin pie spice you could absolutely just use cinnamon or a mix of other spices like nutmeg, cloves, and cinnamon. Also, I listed 1 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice, but I know we actually used more. My kiddos couldn’t stop sprinkling it and I let them;) But, that is one expensive spice! So, use as much or as little as you like.
Directions
- Add the canned pumpkin to a big mixing bowl
- Next, add the flour and cornstarch
- Add in your spices (We actually added more spice at the end too)
- Mix
Pumpkin Pie Playdough
The pumpkin pie filling is extremely wet so it takes quite a bit of the dry ingredients to soak that up.
We added the flour and cornstarch one 1/2 cup at a time. And, as my kiddos played I had to sprinkle more flour a few times to get just the right consistency. As you mix the dough it gets wetter.
We made this dough twice and the first time we kept adding until it wasn’t sticky at all. And, the next time we took it out it was a little dry. This time we left it a little sticky. It’s great to play with, either way.
This recipe makes a ton of dough! I ended up with 2 good sized portions for each of my kiddos to play with. If you don’t want to make that much just cut the ingredients in half.
I like using cornstarch because it makes the dough more smooth. But, I decided to use half flour and half cornstarch because I was low on cornstarch. If you have plenty you could try using more cornstarch than flour.
It came out fantastic! I love the consistency of this dough. And, it was super quick and easy to throw together. We will definitely be making it again.
After you’re done playing, store your pumpkin pie playdough in the fridge for up to a week.
